There is a well-known and often used quote in former England Test cricket captain Mike Brearley’s The Art of Captaincy.
It apparently originated from a French general who was asked if in fact his second-in-command had won a battle. The reply?
“Maybe so. But one thing is certain: If the battle had been lost, I would have lost it.”
When James Sales bowled the 113th over of Gloucestershire’s second innings, at which point the innings lead had swelled beyond 170, Luke Procter set the field deep, bar a single slip. There were easy singles for James Bracey all over the field.
