Batting firepower and resolve please Ripley in Northamptonshire Steelbacks Women’s opening victory

Head coach David Ripley praises Steelbacks Women’s dominant batting and resilience under pressure in their opening victory over Kent, saying the experience will stand them in good stead.

As a seasoned campaigner, David Ripley has won silverware for Northamptonshire as a player and coach and knows that successful cup runs often involve a mixture of dominance and moments where a team has to dig in under pressure.

So, while the head coach draws satisfaction from Steelbacks Women’s impressive batting performance in their opening Metro Bank One Day Cup victory against Kent at Wantage Road on Sunday, he is just as encouraged by the way they responded with the ball.

As he told The Steeler, with the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern equation a factor amid forecast rain showers, the pressure the visitors exerted in the run chase was a good thing for his side to experience early in the tournament.

Talking about their batting effort, which saw them pass 300 in Tier Two cricket for the first time, he said: “The batting was fantastic. We played really well.
