Harry Conway and Ben Sanderson struck with the second new ball as Northamptonshire fought their way back at the end of the day one of their opening Championship game with Lancashire.

The pair snared three late wickets for just 10 runs in five overs to keep the hosts firmly in the game despite Josh Bohannon (90) and Luke Wells (87) sharing a second wicket stand of 132 and Michael Jones smashing a quickfire 71 off 91 balls.

With the Steelbacks gifting Jones two lives after missing two relatively straightforward chances, the visitors were well set at 312 for four before Conway (2-80) and Sanderson (2-55) broke through, Lancashire closing on 346 for seven.

Bohannon again defied Northamptonshire with a well-crafted innings off 167 balls, striking 14 boundaries. His knock comes a year after his valiant 155 to save Lancashire after they followed on at Old Trafford last April.
