Northamptonshire’s bowlers’ hopes of forcing early inroads on the opening day of their clash with Championship promotion rivals Kent hit a roadblock in the shape of Zak Crawley.
Playing himself back into form after being dropped by England earlier this summer, Crawley followed his 81 against Middlesex last week with a vital unbeaten 82 at Wantage Road.
Crawley smashed 12 fours and one six as he combined in an unbroken 154-run opening partnership with Ben Compton (51). After being put into bat, the pair made the most of a day limited to 36 overs after torrential morning rain to put the visitors firmly in the box seat.
