Northamptonshire bowling coach Glen Chapple praised his bowlers for sticking at their task on a tough opening day of the season against Lancashire at Wantage Road which ended in a clatter of wickets with the second new ball.

Revealing Northamptonshire would have bowled had they won the toss, Chapple said: “We knew it was going to be a good surface, but there was always going to be a little bit in it early on. And I think looking back, we'd be reasonably happy how we bowled.

“I thought we were a bit unlucky in the first hour. We went past the bat a number of times. We could have made earlier inroads on another day, but overall, the effort levels were great.

“That's what we looked for. We stuck at the task all day. You can always look at things you could have done better, but we’re really happy with the effort.”
