Northamptonshire head coach Darren Lehmann says his squad shaped up well during their pre-season tour of South Africa and responded positively to the challenges he laid down before the winter.

Lehmann kept a close eye on training back at Wantage Road during his Ashes commentary stint with ABC and was encouraged by what he found on his return in late February.

“We've got to change some things this year,” he told The Steeler. “We've got to improve on different areas, but everyone's doing their department really well. So, from a coach's point of view, I can't complain at all. I didn't have to rocket anyone after being away for four months.

“It was just great to see everyone in great shape, led by the senior players who are fantastic, the new lads that have come in, and also the younger players trying to get better. I've been really pleased.”
