Since Ben Sanderson last faced a substantial red ball workload at Chester-le-Street in mid-June, he has been operating in short, sharp bursts in white-ball cricket in the Vitality Blast and The Hundred.
So, it’s testament not just to Sanderson’s trademark metronomic accuracy, but also to his diligence and hard work that he took four wickets to help skittle Lancashire and put Northamptonshire in a strong position as their County Championship campaign resumed at Old Trafford this week.
He spent The Hundred preparing for exactly this type of heavy workload that lay ahead in Northamptonshire’s crucial Championship run-in with their promotion hopes still very much alive. His presence with the new ball has been central to that challenge with 39 wickets to his name already before this game.
