Exclusive: Justin Broad on injury, an unexpected coaching role and his Northamptonshire future

After injury sidelined him for much of Northamptonshire's trophy-winning season, Justin Broad tells The Steeler how Darren Lehmann kept him involved, his “surprise” contract extension and his hopes for 2027.

Justin Broad says he is itching to return to cricket next summer after spending much of Northamptonshire’s trophy-winning season more as a member of Darren Lehmann’s coaching staff than as one of his players.

A stress fracture in his lower back took away almost all of Broad’s 2026 season, but men’s head coach Lehmann found another way to keep him involved – and an unexpectedly difficult year consequently gave Broad a different perspective on leadership, coaching and his own role within the Steelbacks side.

The 26-year-old all-rounder, who was expected to play a key role this year, is currently rehabbing at his father’s home in South Africa and eagerly looking forward to batting again after more than three months away from cricket so far – the longest he has ever gone without a bat in his hand.
