Bringing cricket to life: Northants’ commentary service for visually impaired fans

For nearly two decades, a dedicated team of volunteers has brought Northamptonshire cricket to life for visually impaired supporters. Andrew Hunt explains the story behind the service and how fans can listen in.

On a cold and windy day in September 2007, from a seat just outside the boundary rope, John Wood, then General Secretary of Northamptonshire Association for the Blind (NAB), along with Northamptonshire cricket supporter Ben Pheazey, trialled a ball-by-ball commentary of the on-field action.

Inspired by a visit to Lord's Cricket Ground in 2007 when a bespoke ball-by-ball commentary service for the visually impaired spectators was broadcast, John identified what specialist equipment was required, and through NAB, raised funds to purchase a transmitter, receivers and headsets.

Northamptonshire County Cricket Club agreed to support the service, and work started to recruit a team of volunteer commentators in time for the following cricket season. The service became fully operational in April 2008.
