Kent’s footsore bowlers are in no doubt about Calvin Harrison’s batting credentials.

For over three hours this weekend, he put them to the sword, pummelling 22 fours and three sixes all around Canterbury’s famous old St Lawrence ground. His career best 153 was his second century in as many innings for Northamptonshire against the Spitfires.

He punished anything short, pulling with impunity on a lifeless track, including a dismissive flick off his hips for six. Anything full was driven either side of the square and he treated travelling fans to some sumptuous shots down the ground. It kept the pressure fully on Kent after Luke Procter and Ricardo Vasconcelos mounted a record opening stand.

But when Harrison arrived on loan with Northamptonshire last April, he was a player more renowned for his legspin – a skill evidenced by his 11 wickets on debut at Old Trafford – seven of them in the second innings to almost spin the Steelbacks to victory.
