Old Trafford the blueprint as Guthrie looks to make his pace count

Liam Guthrie bowled with real pace and intensity against Derbyshire on the opening day of Northamptonshire’s Championship match at Wantage Road yesterday. Several times he had centurion Wayne Madsen ducking and weaving as he sent down a series of well-directed short balls after taking two wickets in his opening over.
Guthrie and his fellow seamers were unable to maintain that initial pressure as the day wore on, with Madsen and Ben Aitchison fighting back with an impressive 197-run stand for the seventh wicket.
But Guthrie’s burst with the still-new ball against Derbyshire showed just how much of a threat he has become this season. He arrived at Wantage Road with a reputation for speed, with Darren Lehmann describing him as possessing “genuine pace” when he signed from Queensland early last year.
