Saif Zaib scored his first century at Lord’s and his third red-ball ton of the summer, but Northamptonshire’s faint promotion hopes were extinguished by a Middlesex victory at the home of cricket.
Zaib’s 110 at least gave his side something to defend, as they were eventually bowled out for 285 in their second innings.
Chasing 134 to win, Harry Conway sparked an early alarm for the hosts, striking twice to reduce Middlesex to 12 for two. But Max Holden and Ben Geddes shared a century partnership as the Seaxes completed their Rothesay County Championship campaign on a high.
Stand-in captain Holden scored exactly 50, with Geddes hitting an unbeaten 59 to guide the home side to their victory target of 134 with ease with seven wickets to spare.
