In his first two seasons at Wantage Road, Justin Broad batted everywhere from numbers one to eight. It’s perhaps no surprise then that his breakthrough last year came when he was given a settled role in the side by incoming head coach Darren Lehmann.

From his middle order position, Broad duly registered his first County Championship century last July, hitting 157 at Canterbury, backing it up with an even bigger knock later that month, 171 against Derbyshire at home.

And, as a top order batter in the Blast, he was one of the stars of Northamptonshire’s run to Finals Day. He revelled in the added responsibility and has been rewarded with the T20 vice-captaincy this season.

Being given a consistent role and knowing exactly what was required of him was crucial, he says.
