There is a smile on Ricardo Vasconcelos’s face again, a clear sign he is enjoying his cricket again, the runs flowing from his bat after a couple of lean seasons.

He has started this summer in style, peeling off two centuries, including a mature 115 against Worcestershire this weekend to lay the foundations for an historic Steelbacks victory.

His run tally stands at just under 300 at 59.6, putting him on track to better last year’s modest total of 468 (average 24.63) before the end of May – if not sooner.

He is closing in on 5,000 first-class runs for the county he has called home since David Ripley first brought him to Wantage Road in 2018.
